Former Nigeria U-23 international Edward Weng in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa remained optimistic about Nigeria’s chances at the Africa Cup of Nations despite a narrow defeat to Egypt in a pre-tournament friendly.
Weng, who is now a coach with NPFL side Plateau United, played down the result, insisting that performance and preparation mattered more than the scoreline.
“I’m not disturbed at all by the result. It’s a test match, and the players had barely settled into camp before the game. Despite the loss, it wasn’t a bad outing,” Weng exclusively told Footy-Africa. “The coach had to make do with available players and test new ones, which is good. I saw some encouraging passages of play.”

“You can see players like Ademola Lookman are gradually regaining rhythm, and that young midfielder Nnadi really impressed me, he really impressed me. You wouldn’t think it was his first game. Chidera Ejuke also did well. Now, the boys must return to training, learn from this game, and prepare for what lies ahead,” he added.
Weng also stressed that the Africa Cup of Nations is always a demanding and physical competition, urging the Super Eagles to be fully prepared mentally and physically for the challenges ahead.
“Nigeria has always been an African powerhouse. I believe this time won’t be any different,” he concluded.
With just one full training session completed, the Super Eagles slipped to a 2–1 loss against the Pharaohs in Cairo as both sides fine-tuned their preparations ahead of the AFCON.
Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt the lead in the 28th minute, tapping in at the back post, before Chidozie Awaziem, who captained the side on the day, drew Nigeria level before halftime with a well-taken effort from a Zaidu Sanusi free kick.
However, Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed restored Egypt’s advantage in the 53rd minute with a close-range finish to seal victory for the hosts.
