Portugal vs Nigeria match preview

Portugal enter this clash hoping for a win to head into the World Cup in high spirits. The 2016 European champions are led by the veteran Cristiano Ronaldo and have several superstars in their ranks including the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, Bernardo Silva, Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes.

Roberto Martinez’s side defeated Chile 2-1 in their previous friendly match and will open their World Cup campaign against The Democratic Republic of Congo on June 17, before also facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in group K action.

Nigeria, on the other hand, failed to qualify for the World Cup tournament after a penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the CAF playoff final ended their hopes of reaching the mundial. It marks their second consecutive absence, after they also missed out on the 2022 edition in Qatar, losing to Ghana in the final playoff phase.

The Super Eagles head into this clash on the back of a 2-2 draw against Poland, where they conceded a late equalizer which denied them victory. The African giants also defeated Zimbabwe 2-0 and Jamaica 3-0 to win a fourth straight Unity Cup title last month.

Prediction

This clash is expected to produce plenty of goals, with both teams likely to score as chances are created freely in what should be an end-to-end affair.

Recent form: Portugal

Portugal are in superb form heading into this clash and are currently on a four-match unbeaten run, where they have won three and drawn just one of these matches.

The former European champions have averaged more than three goals per game during this run and only failed to score once, in a goalless draw against Mexico in March.

Recent form: Nigeria

Nigeria enter this clash in good form and on a six-game unbeaten run across all competitions, where they have won four and recorded two draws, including a 2-2 draw against Poland in their last outing.

The Super Eagles have also kept clean sheets in two of their last three matches, while they have scored two or more goals in all of their last five games.

Calvin Bassey at Fulham: сareer, salary, market value and more

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey is expected to return to the lineup after starting from the bench against Poland in Nigeria’s last match.

The 26-year-old’s defensive abilities will be put to test against Ronaldo and his cohorts and his return to the team could prove crucial to the Super Eagles’ chances of keeping a shut out.
