Azerbaijani giants Qarabag have invited exciting Nigerian youngster Victor Ani to Baku for a trial as they assess the possibility of handing the highly rated forward a professional contract, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
Auwalu Kawuwa, one of the coordinators at Mailantarki Academy, told Footy-Africa.com that Ani has been on Qarabag’s radar for some time and believes the trial represents an excellent opportunity for the youngster.
“Ani is one of the best young forwards in the country and Qarabag is a big club. They have played in the Champions League and competed well, which makes this a very good opportunity for him as a young player,” Kawuwa said.
“I believe he will do well there, make a name for himself and hopefully earn a good contract. That would also motivate other players at the academy to work towards achieving similar opportunities. He is very fast, has a good shot and, although he is primarily a centre-forward, he can also play from the wings. That versatility is another one of his strengths. I believe he has the potential to make it in Azerbaijan. This is a big opportunity for him and we are hopeful he can take it.”
Ani, who is a product of Abuja-based Mailantarki Academy, has been on the fringes of Nigeria’s youth national teams and has continued to attract attention with his performances at academy level.
After being scouted in Nigeria, the 18-year-old was invited to Azerbaijan for a closer assessment by Qarabag, with the club keen to evaluate his potential before deciding on a permanent move.
Footy-Africa.com understands that Ani could be offered a two-year contract, with an option for a further year, if he impresses the club’s technical staff during his time in Baku.
The teenager arrived in Azerbaijan on Thursday and is expected to begin training immediately, giving him the opportunity to showcase his qualities alongside Qarabag’s senior players.
Qarabag are currently competing in European football and recently secured their place in the UEFA Conference League play-off round after a dramatic 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kyiv in Baku overturned a first-leg deficit.
