Sadio Mané turned down Manchester United before becoming Liverpool legend

Sadio Mané has shed new light on one of the biggest “what-ifs” of his career, his decision to walk away from a potential move to Manchester United in 2015, a full year before Liverpool secured his signature and turned him into a Premier League superstar.

Back then, Mané was rapidly rising through the ranks after a standout debut campaign with Southampton. His 10 goals had propelled the Saints to an impressive seventh-place finish, and Europe’s elite were beginning to take notice. United, scrambling for attacking spark after failing to land Pedro, identified the young Senegalese winger as a bold but risky target. Many wondered whether he had truly proven himself at the highest level.

But behind the scenes, United’s interest was very real. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Mané revealed that then-manager Louis van Gaal personally reached out in an attempt to lure him to Old Trafford. The conversation was direct, and so was Mané’s hesitation.

“Van Gaal called me and said he wanted me at Manchester United,” Mané said. “But my question was simple: you have Depay, Rooney, Di Maria, Van Persie… where am I going to play? I wanted to play, not sit on the bench.”

Van Gaal reassured him that opportunities would come through effort and discipline, but Mané admitted he simply wasn’t convinced. He felt the timing was wrong, too much competition, too much uncertainty, and not enough guarantee of the minutes he desperately needed in that stage of his development.

He also held discussions with Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, whose long-term project appealed to him far more than United’s. Yet even then, Mané sensed he needed another season to refine his game and prove he could sustain top-level performances. So he stayed put at Southampton, continuing his upward trajectory.

Twelve months later, Liverpool arrived with a £36 million bid, and everything changed. Mané flourished at Anfield, winning the Premier League and Champions League while cementing his reputation as one of the world’s finest forwards, eventually finishing second in the 2022 Ballon d’Or voting.

In hindsight, rejecting Manchester United wasn’t just a career decision for Mané, it was the choice that shaped his legacy.
