Highly rated Nigerian winger Seun Akanji spoke to Footy-Africa after completing his first gym session with Lillestrøm.

Norwegian top-flight side have completed the permanent signing of Akanji from Sporting Lagos on a four-year deal, bringing to an end a transfer that had been in the works since last year.

“It feels good. It’s a big step for me, but I see it as the beginning of something bigger. I’m here to work, improve and show the world what I can do. It is no doubt a big move and a big challenge, but it is one I am fully prepared to take on.”

The young winger also revealed that he has never tried to model his game after any particular player, preferring instead to develop his own style.

“I don’t really try to be like anyone. I just focus on my own game. I’d say my strengths are my pace, confidence, dribbling and my ability to trouble defenders. I have quick feet, and I just want to do well, be consistent and keep working hard.”

Lillestrøm have no plans to loan Nigerian teenager Seun Akanji

Akanji believes his rapid progress has been built on discipline, a willingness to learn and listening to those around him.

“It’s all about consistency and hard work. I kept learning, listening to my coaches and following their technical instructions. The quality here is very high, and I want to keep improving, help the team and take every opportunity that comes my way.”

Like many young Nigerian footballers making the journey to Europe, Akanji has one long-term ambition that continues to drive him.

“Playing for the Super Eagles is a dream, but for now I’m focused on doing well here. If I perform consistently, I’m sure the call-up will come.”

The 18-year-old arrives in the Eliteserien as one of Nigeria’s brightest young prospects after an impressive rise through the ranks at Sporting Lagos. Akanji played a pivotal role in the club’s successful 2025/26 Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign, helping them secure the league title and earn promotion back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Although an agreement between both clubs had been reached months ago, the transfer has now been officially completed, allowing the talented winger to begin the next chapter of his career in European football.

Lillestrøm’s interest in Akanji dates back 18 months when he impressed during a trial with the Norwegian side. His performances convinced the club to secure an option to sign him once he turned 18, and they have now followed through by handing him a long-term contract that runs until the summer of 2030.

Lillestrøm SK move beckons for Seun Akanji after succesful season with Sporting Lagos

Before making the move to Norway, Akanji also stood out for Sporting Lagos’ academy side during the 2024/25 TCC League season, further cementing his reputation as one of the country’s most exciting young talents.

The move represents Akanji’s first experience in European football, but the teenager is embracing the challenge with confidence and ambition.

Lillestrøm will be hoping Akanji’s pace, direct running and fearless attacking style can add another dimension to their squad as they continue their campaign in the Norwegian top flight.
