Gideon Mensah‘s move to FC Köln has left many wondering how one of Ghana’s standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was allowed to leave Auxerre without a transfer fee. Footy-Africa can reveal that the decision had little to do with finances and everything to do with loyalty.
According to sources close to the deal, Auxerre deliberately chose not to stand in Mensah’s way after years of commitment to the French club.
The Ghana international joined Auxerre from Red Bull Salzburg in 2022 and turned down opportunities to leave on several occasions. Interest arrived from clubs including FC Porto and Sheffield United, but Auxerre blocked his exit as they considered him a key part of the squad.
When the club suffered relegation in 2023, Mensah resisted the temptation to move elsewhere and instead stayed to help Auxerre fight their way back to Ligue 1. His performances proved vital as the club secured promotion the following year.
Auxerre were keen to reward him with a new contract, but Mensah made it clear that the time had come for a fresh challenge.
Rather than demand a transfer fee or force negotiations, the French club chose to honour his service by allowing him to leave as a free agent, a decision described by sources as a reward for his professionalism, loyalty and contribution over four seasons.
Mensah has now signed a two-year contract with Bundesliga side FC Köln, where he will begin the next chapter of his career.
