Nigerian international striker Taiwo Awoniyi is nearing a move to Bundesliga side Werder Bremen. The German club is keen to sign the 28-year-old very soon, according to exclusive information from Africafoot.

Having been sidelined at the start of the season due to injury, Awoniyi returned to action a few weeks ago with Nottingham Forest. However, since his return on October 18 against Chelsea (0-3), the Nigerian international has struggled to regain his form. Relegated to the bench, he has only played short stints and his statistics are not impressive. He has only played four Premier League matches this season, totalling 133 minutes.

Awoniyi to leave Nottingham Forest on deadline day, as Werder interested

While a contract extension between the two parties was being considered before his injury, the Premier League club’s board has reportedly backed out in light of the striker’s current situation.

According to the report, the Ilorin-native is no longer a priority for Nottingham Forest’s management. A meeting took place this week between the two parties, and it appears Nottingham Forest will not stand in the player’s way this winter if a satisfactory offer is made.

The English club is also working behind the scenes to recruit a new striker this winter to partner Igor Jesus, the current first-choice forward. The player, for his part, wants to get more regular playing time at a new club. While he would prefer to stay in the Premier League, no other English club has yet expressed interest in signing him. However, Awoniyi has an option in Germany.

Sources close to the player indicate that he is being targeted by Werder Bremen. The German club, which has been tracking the Nigerian since last summer, has reportedly already made inquiries about his situation.

Taiwo Awoniyi: Four Destinations for the Super Eagles forward

Horst Steffen, the Werder Bremen manager, greatly admires the powerful and athletic Nigerian striker and would be ready to make him a key player in his attacking line if an agreement is reached between Werder Bremen and Nottingham Forest.

Awoniyi is under contract until June 2027. His current Transfermarkt value is estimated at €14 million.
