Former Super Eagles midfielder Garba Lawal, a gold medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa welcomed the news about Nigeria international Josh Maja‘s possible contract extension with West Bromwich Albion and expressed his delight at seeing the player back on the pitch.

The 26-year-old forward could be in line for a new deal at West Bromwich Albion, with reports suggesting the club is preparing to extend his contract despite his recent injury setbacks. Maja only recently returned to action after a long-term injury that kept him out for much of last season. While he has yet to reclaim a starting spot at The Hawthorns, making just three substitute appearances so far this campaign, the club’s faith in Maja remains strong.

“I know injuries are part of the game, but I always feel bad when players suffer serious, season-ending injuries like the one Josh (Maja) had last season,” Lawal exclusively told Footy-Africa. “It is a joy seeing him back playing football again, even if it’s just from the bench for now. It’s a gradual process, but I hope he can get his form back.

“He was doing really well before the injury, and I believe he can add more competition to the Super Eagles’ attack if he gets back to his best. The club also clearly trusts him, that is why they are talking about a new contract. If they did not value him, there would be no discussions at all. But most importantly, I am just happy to see him on the pitch once again.” Lawal added.

Before his setback, Maja had been in fine form, scoring 12 goals and providing two assists, making him one of the Championship’s leading scorers before injury cruelly cut his season short.

His current deal runs until the end of the season, but West Brom are keen to tie him down for longer, even though the exact length of the extension has not been disclosed.

Maja, who has one cap for Nigeria and has been named in several provisional Super Eagles squads, is hoping that consistent game time and improved form will boost his chances of making the national team for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
