Although no African team has lifted the trophy in the competition’s history, several players from the continent have made their mark, scoring goals that have contributed to their country’s progress. These are the top 5 highest goalscoring African players in FIFA World Cup history.

Asamoah Gyan (Ghana, 6 goals)

The former Ghana striker ranks top of this list as African’s highest goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals. Asamoah Gyan featured in three editions of the competition, 2006, 2010 and 2014, making 11 appearances.

Gyan scored Ghana’s first-ever goal at the FIFA World Cup in a 2-0 win over Czech Republic in the 2006 edition, before scoring three times in the Black Stars run to the quarterfinals in 2010 and twice in the 2014 edition. Asamoah Gyan also remains the only African player to score in more than two World Cup tournaments.

Roger Milla (Cameroon, 5 goals)

Cameroon legend Roger Milla ranks second on this list having scored five goals at the FIFA World Cup. Milla featured in three editions – in 1982, 1990 and 1994. He scored four goals at the 1990 tournament despite mostly coming on as a substitute and led Cameroon to a quarterfinal finish, as they became the first African country to achieve the feat.

The African legend became the competition’s oldest goalscorer aged 42 in 1994 with his goal against Russia.

Ahmed Musa (Nigeria, 4 goals)

Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa’s four goals at the FIFA World Cup makes him Africa’s third highest goal scorer at the competition. The former Leicester City attacker has featured in two tournaments, scoring twice apiece in 2014 and 2018.

Musa scored twice against Argentina in 2014 before bagging another brace in 2018 against Iceland and is Nigeria’s highest goal scorer at the FIFA World Cup.

Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon, 3 goals)

Samuel Eto’o is the second Cameroon footballer on this list, as his three goals ranks him fourth on the highest goalscoring African chart at the FIFA World Cup. The four-time African footballer of the year award winner featured in four editions – 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014, scoring three times in eight appearances.

Eto’o scored once in 2002 against Saudi Arabia, before adding two further goals in 2010 against Denmark and Netherlands.

Papa Bouba Diop (Senegal, 3 goals)

Senegal legend Papa Bouba Diop rounds up this highly stacked list having scored three times at the FIFA World Cup. Now of blessed memory, Bouba Diop is the only non-attacking player on this list.

The former Senegal international scored three goals at the 2002 edition, including the first goal of the tournament in the shock opening match win against France, as the Teranga Lions reached the quarterfinals of the competition.
