Former KAA Gent winger Phillip Azango is approaching a crucial period in his career as speculation over his future at Spartak Trnava continues to gather momentum, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
The Nigerian winger is entering the final year of his contract with the Slovakian side, a situation that has naturally attracted interest from clubs looking to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
Sources close to the player have indicated that clubs in both Hungary and the Czech Republic have made inquiries about Azango’s availability, with several teams monitoring his situation closely.
Despite the growing transfer speculation, Spartak Trnava are understood to be keen on keeping the experienced winger. Azango remains one of the club’s most influential players and a respected figure within the dressing room, making him an important part of the team’s plans moving forward.

His resurgence has not gone unnoticed, with scouts from neighbouring leagues reportedly impressed by his performances and experience. As things stand, Spartak Trnava could still offer the Nigerian a new contract in a bid to ward off interest from rival clubs.
However, with just one year remaining on his current deal, the coming months could prove decisive in determining whether Azango extends his stay in Slovakia or embarks on a new challenge elsewhere in Central Europe.
Player representative Sosh Umaru has confirmed there is interest in Phillip Azango from clubs in Hungary and the Czech Republic, but insists the winger remains fully committed to Spartak Trnava.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Umaru said Azango’s immediate focus is on his current club despite the growing transfer speculation:
“Yes, Azango had a good season and there have been inquiries from clubs in Hungary and the Czech Republic, but our focus remains on his current club,” Umaru said. “He still has one year left on his contract and, while he is free to consider his options in the future, the priority right now is Spartak Trnava. He is one of the team’s most important players and also one of the leaders in the dressing room.”
“The fans love him, and he has built a strong connection with the city and the club. Because of that, the first option is to remain at Trnava and continue competing for trophies. I can confirm there is genuine interest from those clubs, including one based in Budapest.”

Umaru added that Azango is currently taking a well-earned break after a demanding season and is not thinking about transfer matters:
“At the moment, Phillip is enjoying his holiday, spending time with his family and recharging ahead of pre-season. That is his main focus right now. When the time comes, we will assess all available options and make the best decision for his career.”
The 29-year-old enjoyed a solid campaign last season, registering five goals and three assists in 32 appearances across all competitions. More importantly, he successfully put behind him the injury problems that had previously disrupted his progress, returning to become a consistent performer for the club.
