Uganda’s U-17 national team has extended its phenomenal World Cup journey with yet another landmark achievement, this time, knocking out Senegal to secure a place in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
At the Aspire Zone’s Pitch 7 in Qatar, the Cubs held their nerve to claim a hard-fought 1–0 victory, powered by a moment of brilliance from Abubakali Walusimbi.
The decisive moment came just 15 minutes into the contest. Midfield engine Brian Ijara wrestled back possession, quickly feeding captain Hamuza Ssengooba, who slipped a clever pass into Walusimbi’s path. The forward needed no second invitation, unleashing a blistering strike from the edge of the box that nestled into the bottom corner.

Fresh off their historic triumph over France in the group stages, Uganda came into the match brimming with belief, and it showed. The Cubs dictated early proceedings, forcing Senegal onto the back foot before scoring the opener.
Once behind, the Young Lions of Teranga came charging. Wave after wave of attack followed, but they found goalkeeper Edrisah Waibi in inspired form. The shot-stopper delivered a commanding performance, pulling off crucial saves to keep Uganda in front.
Senegal nearly found a way back late on—a penalty shout waved away after VAR review, followed shortly by a goal chalked off for offside in the dying moments. It simply wasn’t their day.
At full-time, Uganda stood tall: resolute, fearless, and deserved winners.
