Ghana defender Jerome Opoku is set to enter the 2026 FIFA World Cup with growing interest from across Europe, and sources have told Footy-Africa.com that a strong tournament could significantly increase his current market value.

The Istanbul Basaksehir centre-back is currently valued at around €8 million, but scouts from Valencia, Fulham and Nottingham Forest are expected to closely monitor his performances during the tournament in North America.

Sources indicate that all three clubs have been tracking the defender following an impressive season in Turkey, where he established himself as one of Basaksehir’s most reliable performers.

Valencia open talks for Basaksehir defender Jerome Opoku

With Ghana heading to the World Cup amid injuries to key defenders Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu, Opoku is expected to play a leading role in Carlos Queiroz’s backline and could emerge as one of the team’s most important players.

The 26-year-old further enhanced his reputation in Ghana’s recent 1-1 draw against Wales, producing a composed defensive display that strengthened his chances of starting in the World Cup opener against Panama.

According to sources close to the player, Opoku’s focus remains firmly on helping Ghana have a successful tournament rather than on transfer speculation. However, there is also recognition that the World Cup presents a unique opportunity to showcase his abilities on the biggest stage.

A strong campaign against Panama, England and Croatia could increase competition for his signature and potentially push his valuation well beyond the current €8 million mark.

Valencia are understood to be searching for defensive reinforcements, while Premier League sides Fulham and Nottingham Forest are also weighing up possible moves.

For Opoku, the priority is Ghana’s World Cup campaign. But with Europe watching closely, the tournament could prove decisive in shaping the next chapter of his club career.
