Liverpool FC could be set to make one of the most exciting signings of the decade, as multiple sources from both The Gambia and England have exclusively confirmed to Footy-Africa the club’s growing interest in Yankuba Minteh.

The 21-year-old Gambian winger has been dubbed “the next big thing” in African football and is now firmly on Liverpool’s radar following his electric start to the 2024/25 Premier League season.

Record-breaking move in the making

Reports suggest that Liverpool are prepared to pay over £100 million, including signing bonuses, to secure Minteh’s services — a fee that would place him among the club’s most expensive acquisitions ever.

The move would also mark a significant statement of intent as Liverpool looks to refresh their attacking lineup and plan for life beyond Mohamed Salah.

Perfect Successor to Mo Salah

Some of Liverpool’s most respected figures have already voiced their approval of the potential signing. Jamie Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports last season, described Minteh as “the player to watch” for the 2024/25 campaign, which Liverpool went on to win thrillingly.

Carragher further hinted that Minteh’s blend of pace, pressing, and fearless attacking play makes him the “ideal long-term successor” to Salah, whose workload and age have been under increasing scrutiny.

Minteh’s ability to play across the front line and his relentless energy have drawn comparisons not only to Salah, but also to Sadio Mané — another African star who rose to global prominence at Anfield.

Staying true to his roots

Despite growing interest from several major agencies hoping to represent him, sources close to the player exclusively told Footy-Africa that Minteh remains loyal to his Gambian representative Bakary Bojang, who has guided his career since his early days.

That loyalty and humility have earned as his country’s biggest football export since the rise of the “Scorpions” on the African stage.

Bright Start at Brighton

Currently starring for Brighton & Hove Albion, Minteh has started all nine of their Premier League matches this season, contributing one goal and two assists. Beyond the numbers, his tireless work rate and willingness to track back have impressed German manager Fabian Hürzeler and football pundits alike.

Brighton fans have quickly taken to the young Gambian, whose fearless dribbling and pressing intensity have been vital in the club’s high-tempo style.

It’s precisely those attributes that make him such an appealing prospect for Liverpool, whose system under Arne Slot thrives on dynamic wide players. A manager he has grown under during his loan spell at Feyenoord from his unplayed Newcastle United deal.

Road Ahead

While no official bid has yet been confirmed, insiders suggest that discussions between Liverpool and Brighton could accelerate as the January transfer window approaches.

Should the deal materialise, it would represent a major milestone for Gambian football — and a defining chapter in Minteh’s meteoric rise.

For now, Yankuba Minteh continues to focus on his performances for Brighton, but the growing chorus of admiration from Merseyside and beyond suggests that a move to Anfield could soon become a reality. The Scorpion sensation is no longer just a rising star — he’s a player destined for greatness.
