Paul Onuachu’s return to Trabzonspor has drawn strong support, exclusively for Footy-Africa, from former Super Eagles striker Dominic Iorfa, who believes the move is the right step forward for the towering Nigerian forward.

After a difficult stint with Southampton, where he managed just four goals in all competitions for the club, Onuachu is heading back to a familiar ground.

The 6’7” striker struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League following his move from Trabzonspor in the 2022/23 season.

While he had impressed in Turkey with his scoring prowess, things did not click in England, and with Southampton now relegated to the Championship, the club is offloading players as they reshape their squad. Onuachu has become one of the notable names heading for the exit.

Initially, Trabzonspor were keen to bring him back, but a deal could not be reached with Southampton. Now, with financial circumstances shifting at the English club, the move has finally materialized.

Iorfa, who once featured for Galatasaray in the Turkish top flight, is confident Onuachu will rediscover his form and flourish once more.

“Paul is a good player and I believe he will do well in Turkey with Trabzonspor, where he has already proven himself,” Iorfa said. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out for him in Southampton, but that doesn’t take away from his ability. Football has its ups and downs, but the key is to keep going.”

When asked if Onuachu can return to the form that saw him score 27 goals in all competitions during his initial spell in Turkey, Iorfa didn’t hesitate.

“Definitely, I believe he can do it. He’s done it before, so there’s no reason he can’t do it again,” said the former Nigerian international, who represented the country at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. “In fact, I think he can even be better. He’s got Premier League experience now, and that will help him. The fans in Turkey already love him, and that kind of support is crucial. I’m confident he’ll get back to scoring goals regularly.”

Onuachu remains a fan favorite at Trabzonspor, having netted 17 goals in 25 matches during his previous stint. His return is seen not just as a homecoming, but as a chance for redemption and a reminder of the quality he still possesses.
