Contrary to reports that Mexican side Pumas UNAM (Club Universidad Nacional) is close to signing Nigerian international Kelechi Iheanacho, the club and the player’s representatives are yet to enter formal talks, Footy-Africa has exclusively learned.

The forward only joined Spanish La Liga side Sevilla last summer on a two-year contract, slated to run until the 2026 summer. However, he spent the last part of the preceding campaign on loan at Middlesbrough. He has since returned to Sevilla for preseason.

Despite interest from Pumas UNAM, it has yet to be registered as formal and the parties have yet to get into contact over a deal. Precisely, a deal is not close as reported by various media outlets, according to an exclusive source at ROGON, who represent the 28-year-old.

“The fact is Pumas UNAM have not made an official contact or bid for Kelechi Iheanacho. I cannot rule out their interest, but at this point, there’s no contact. At the moment, we are all aware he’s back in training at Sevilla and is focused on improving his game. The future is open at this point, everything is possible, we’re calm, the player is in no rush,” said the exclusive source to Footy-Africa in an interview.

Last season on loan at Middlesbrough after joining them in January, across all competitions, he played 15 games with one goal and two assists. At Sevilla in the first half of the campaign, he netted three goals in 11 appearances across the Spanish La Liga and the Copa del Rey. In the past, he has featured for Leicester City and Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Iheanacho, whose Transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €4.5 million, remains one of Nigeria senior team’s most senior players, amassing 58 caps with 15 goals and six assists.
