Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has released his squad list for the upcoming international friendlies against Iran and Jordan, set to take place in Antalya, Turkey.

The 23-man squad features a core group of players who were part of Nigeria’s campaign at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished as runners-up in the tournament held between December and January.

Chelle has largely retained trust in that group, while also introducing a handful of fresh faces as he continues to assess depth and build competition within the team.

Originally scheduled to be held in Amman, Jordan, the mini-series was relocated to Turkey due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Matches are now set to go ahead in Antalya, providing a neutral and stable venue for all participating teams.

The squad includes established names such as Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, and Semi Ajayi.

However, the biggest talking points are the maiden call-ups handed to Rangers defender Emmanuel Fernandez, Yira Sor, and Phillip Otele. Goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye also returns to the team after nearly a year out of the squad.

In this feature, Footy-Africa spoke to former Nigeria international Simon Zenke, who shared his thoughts on the newly invited players and what they could bring to the national team setup.

Emmanuel Fernandez – Glasgow Rangers (Scotland)

Zenke: “I first heard about him a couple of months ago when it was rumoured that Eric Chelle was looking to refresh the defensive lineup. Since then, I have been monitoring his progress closely.

He is a very good player, no doubt, even though I think this is his first major season with a consistent run of games in the top flight. To be honest, he has not done badly at all.

Fernandez is strong in the air, has great pace for a defender, and can tackle effectively, something that seems to be gradually disappearing in the modern game. He is also versatile, although he plays primarily as a central defender. I believe he will be a great asset to the team.”

Philip Otele – Hamburger SV (Germany)

Zenke: “This player reminds me of myself during my playing days, as he operates as a winger. I followed him closely during his time in Switzerland, and I was quite impressed. I actually expected him to make the AFCON squad, but that did not happen.

It is only a matter of time before he lights up German football with his pace, skill, and ability to take on defenders. I am a big fan of his game, and I am excited to see him finally get his opportunity with the national team.

Even though we already have quality wingers like Lookman and Ejuke, I believe Otele offers something different and could add another dimension to the attack.”

Yira Sor – KRC Genk (Belgium)

Zenke: “I think his invitation is long overdue. I first saw him play for the Flying Eagles in 2019, and he immediately caught my attention.

He has been impressive since moving to Genk, and for me, he might be the fastest Nigerian footballer I have seen in the last decade. Not long ago, he was reportedly clocked as the fastest player in the Belgian league over a two-year period.

What I like most about him is his directness, and his finishing has improved significantly. As a winger, his pace is a major asset, and I hope he can make good use of it for Nigeria.

The friendlies in Turkey are expected to provide valuable insight into these new additions, especially if they are given the opportunity to feature.”

For Chelle, the matches represent more than just preparation—they are a chance to test new options and further shape the future of the Super Eagles.
