Kenyan international and central midfielder Anthony Akumu is on the verge of joining Spanish third-tier side AD Merida, following an extended spell of negotiations, Footy-Africa has exclusively learned.

AD Merina want to sign the experienced midfielder on a two-year employment contract that will run at least until the 2026/27 campaign. He is currently a free agent having left Iranian side Kheybar Khorramabad FC after the expiry of his contract on June 30th.

A source close to the player has exclusively disclosed to Footy-Africa that the latter has held talks with AD Merida over a move that could see him pen a two-year contract. The pending negotiations hinge on what his salary will be across the two-year spell.

β€œAnthony (Akumu) has been in direct talks with AD Merida for the past week, and an agreement is now close. The club offered him a two-year contract and all that remains now is how much he will get paid as wages. If an agreement is reached, the plan is for the player to fly to Spain this week for medicals and contract signing,” the exclusive source told Footy-Africa.

In his most recent spell at Kheybar Khorramabad, Akumu, whose transfermarkt valuation is estimated at €150,000, made 18 appearances across all competitions. He joined them from Sagan Tosu where he featured 14 times with one goal.

Besides Kheybar Khorramabad and Sagan Tosu, the 32-year-old has played for South African top-flight outfit Kaizer Chiefs, Zambian side Zesco United and Kenyan giants, Gor Mahia.

Meanwhile, with the Kenyan national team, the Harambee Stars, having debuted in 2011, Akumu has since accumulated 53 competitive caps. He is one of the most experienced players currently among the Harambee Stars.
