Fast-rising Nigerian forward Seun Akanji told Footy-Africa that he is thrilled to have played a key role in guiding Sporting Lagos back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after the club secured promotion in impressive fashion.
Akanji was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) as Sporting Lagos were crowned champions of the 2025-26 Nigeria National League (NNL), finishing ahead of city rivals Inter Lagos in the Super Four tournament held in Ikenne.
The talented attacker was one of Sporting Lagos’ standout performers throughout a remarkable campaign, helping establish the club as one of the most exciting teams in Nigerian football.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa after the title-clinching success in Ikemne, Akanji reflected on a season he described as both demanding and deeply rewarding.
“It was a good season for me and for us as a team,” he said. “It was very difficult, but we gave everything to achieve our target. It wasn’t easy, but we are happy to have done it.”
The young forward also expressed his pride after being recognised as the tournament’s standout player.
“Winning the MVP is a dream come true because football is what I love,” Akanji added. “This team is definitely going to be ready for the professional league next season. We are fighters, and I believe we are among the best.”
However, Akanji’s stellar performances may have earned him a move away from Sporting Lagos before the start of the new NPFL season.
Footy-Africa understands that the highly rated youngster is set to complete a transfer to Norwegian side Lillestrøm SK, with an agreement reportedly reached between both clubs.
The player is understood to have signed a five-year contract with the Eliteserien club and could travel to Norway as early as July to begin the next chapter of his career.
If confirmed, the move would represent another significant step in Kanji’s rapid rise and further underline Sporting Lagos’ growing reputation for developing elite talent.
