Gambian international Sheriff Sinyan has left CFR Cluj after failing to reach an agreement with the club over a contract extension, Footy-Africa can exclusively confirm.
The 29-year-old defender’s current deal is set to expire on June 30, bringing an end to his spell with the Romanian side. Discussions over a new contract were unable to produce a breakthrough, resulting in the player’s departure as a free agent.
CFR Cluj is now expected to enter the market in search of a replacement, with reports suggesting the club is targeting a defender from Portugal’s top division to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season.
Despite his exit, Sinyan is not expected to remain without a club for long. According to Footy-Africa’s sources, the experienced centre-back has already attracted interest from several teams in Romania’s SuperLiga, with Rapid Bucharest emerging as one of the leading contenders for his signature.
Sheriff Sinyan weighing future as CFR Cluj open contract extension talks
A move to Rapid could see Sinyan reunite with coach Daniel Pancu, who previously worked with the Gambian defender during his time at CFR Cluj. The existing relationship between player and coach could prove to be an important factor as discussions progress.
Universitatea Cluj has also been linked with Sinyan earlier in the transfer window, further highlighting the demand for the defender within Romanian football.
Sinyan leaves CFR Cluj after a productive 2025/26 campaign in which he remained a key figure in the team’s defensive setup. He made 35 appearances across the season, scoring one goal and providing one assist. His contributions at the back also helped the club register 10 clean sheets in domestic league competition.
Known for his physical presence, aerial ability and leadership qualities, the Scorpions defender continues to be regarded as one of The Gambia’s most experienced footballers abroad.
