Former Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu has ended speculation over his future by signing a new long-term contract with Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv and gave an exclusive interview to Footy-Africa.
The 28-year-old had been heavily linked with a move away from the club this summer after attracting interest from Botev’s fierce rivals Levski Sofia, as well as clubs in Switzerland, where he previously played for Lausanne-Sport.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Kalu has committed his future to Botev by signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2029.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa after putting pen to paper on his new deal, the Nigerian winger admitted there was genuine interest from other clubs but said his discussions with the club’s president ultimately convinced him to stay.
“Yes, there was interest from a few clubs, so there was a possibility that I could have left the club this summer. However, after discussions with the club president, I decided to sign a contract extension so I can focus on the most important thing, which is playing football.”

“To be honest, the club president has been very good to me. I cannot deny that, and he played a major role in my decision to sign a new contract. That issue is over now. I am ready to give my best and help the team achieve success alongside my teammates. I am looking forward to great things with Botev this season,” he concluded.
Kalu’s decision to remain at Botev Plovdiv comes after a successful campaign in which he rediscovered the form.
After rebuilding his career following his departure from Watford, the winger enjoyed an impressive season in Bulgaria, making 26 appearances in all competitions.
He scored three goals and provided three assists, playing a key role in Botev’s attacking play and earning praise for his consistency and experience.
