Saudi Pro League side Al-Taawoun have stepped up their pursuit of Nigerian midfielder Ibrahim Olawoyin, with initial talks already underway with Turkish club Çaykur Rizespor, Footy-Africa can exclusively report.
Sources close to the player Fisayo Dairo informed Footy-Africa that Al-Taawoun have made formal contact with Rizespor over a potential move for the 28-year-old.
Olawoyin has entered the final 12 months of his contract with the Turkish Super Lig side, who are keen to extend his stay. However, the growing interest from Saudi Arabia has added fresh uncertainty to his future.
Footy-Africa understands that Al-Taawoun have submitted an opening offer worth around €800,000, but the bid falls short of Rizespor’s €1 million valuation.
The Saudi club are expected to return with an improved proposal in the coming days as they look to bridge the gap in negotiations.
Rizespor, meanwhile, are not prepared to lose one of their key players without a fight. The Turkish club are planning to present Olawoyin with a new contract and will continue efforts to convince him to remain at the club
Footy-Africa also understands that Al-Taawoun have already held discussions with the player’s representatives and are prepared to offer the Nigerian international a lucrative three-year contract on significantly improved financial terms.
The midfielder is expected to make a decision on his future in the coming days.
Olawoyin has established himself as an important figure for Rizespor since joining the club. Last season, he made 28 Turkish Super Lig appearances, scoring once and providing three assists.
He enjoyed an outstanding 2024-25 campaign, registering six goals and seven assists in 32 league appearances, while in the 2023-24 season he featured 36 times, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
With interest from Saudi Arabia intensifying and Rizespor determined to retain him, the coming days are expected to be crucial in deciding where Olawoyin will be playing his football next season
