Nigerian-born defender Endurance Alade during an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, opened up about the circumstances of his departure from Dutch Eredivisie side Vitesse Arnhem, revealing how injuries and a lack of a clear pathway into the first team affected his final season at the Dutch club.
Alade left Vitesse at the end of his contract after struggling to secure a regular place in the senior set-up. His representative is now exploring opportunities for the defender, with discussions over a potential move already under way.
The talented centre-back believes the presence of several established defenders, combined with the club’s arrangements for its Under-21 side, made it increasingly difficult for him to progress.
“The reason for the departure is that there was no clear pathway for me to break into the first team,” Alade told Footy-Africa. “There were already several defenders in my position who were under contract and were expected to stay, so there was limited perspective for me to make that step. Because of that, they did not offer me a contract.”
Limited opportunities at Vitesse
Alade’s frustration extended beyond his chances of breaking into the senior team. The defender also explained how the situation within Vitesse’s Under-21 set-up affected his opportunities to gain regular playing time.
With several first-team defenders dropping down to the Under-21s to maintain match fitness, competition for places became even more intense.
“Due to the number of defenders in the first team, players with first-team contracts regularly dropped down to the U21s to get minutes,” he explained.
“Since they had contracts and had priority, I sometimes had to start on the bench or was even left out of the squad.”
The situation also affected the prospect of Alade receiving an age exemption, which could have allowed him to continue playing at Under-21 level.
“Vitesse also felt that applying for an age exemption or dispensation for me would not make much sense in that situation,” he added.
The combination of limited senior opportunities and inconsistent involvement at Under-21 level left Alade facing an uncertain future. With no new contract forthcoming, his time at the club came to an end.

Injuries disrupted difficult final season
Alade also endured an injury-hit campaign that made it difficult for him to build momentum and demonstrate his full capabilities.
The defender suffered an inflamed foot in September, an issue that kept him out of action until the end of October. He later sustained a badly bruised toe, which sidelined him from late February until early April.
“Last season was honestly a difficult period for me because I had two injuries,” he said. “At the beginning of the season, in September, I had an inflamed foot, which kept me out until the end of October. Later, from the end of February until early April, I had a badly bruised toe.”
The interruptions prevented Alade from establishing a consistent rhythm at a crucial stage of his development. For a young defender seeking to make the transition into senior football, the ability to train and compete regularly is particularly important.
“Because of those injuries, I struggled to build a consistent rhythm and didn’t get the opportunity to show myself in the way I wanted,” he added.
Alade admitted that the circumstances also took a mental toll, particularly as he struggled to establish a strong relationship with the coach.
“Mentally, it was also difficult at times. The overall situation didn’t feel very healthy for me anymore, and I also felt that I wasn’t really building a strong connection with the coach.”
Despite the difficult campaign, the defender’s departure should not be viewed as a verdict on his potential. Injuries and limited opportunities can complicate a young player’s development, and a fresh environment could give him the chance to rebuild his confidence, regain consistency and demonstrate his defensive qualities.

Agent exploring next move
Alade is now looking for a new club as he seeks a fresh start following his departure from Vitesse.
His representative is exploring potential destinations, with discussions ongoing. No new club has been confirmed, but the immediate priority will be finding an environment where the defender can compete regularly and continue his development.
A move that offers a clearer route to first-team football could prove important after a season in which both injuries and squad competition restricted his opportunities.
At this stage of his career, consistent minutes and the confidence of a coaching staff could be just as valuable as the profile of the club he joins.

Alade keen to represent Nigeria
Born in the Netherlands, Alade also has ambitions of representing Nigeria, giving his next career move added significance as he looks to establish himself in senior football.
The National Team coaches have continued to monitor players of Nigerian heritage developing across European football, and a sustained run of performances at club level would help Alade strengthen his prospects of attracting attention.
For now, his focus is on securing the right opportunity and putting a difficult period behind him. A successful move could allow the defender to regain momentum, showcase his ability and take the next step towards fulfilling his ambitions.
After an injury-disrupted final season and an exit shaped by limited opportunities, Alade will hope his next chapter provides the platform he believes he needs to fulfil his potential — and, in time, pursue his ambition of wearing Nigeria’s green and white.
