FC Barcelona are preparing to offer Ghanaian defender Hafiz Gariba a new contract until 2031 as they look to secure the future of the highly rated centre-back, Footy-Africa understands.
The Spanish giants are expected to hold talks with the 19-year-old’s representatives over a long-term agreement, with his current contract set to expire in 2027.
A source has told Footy-Africa that Gariba’s representatives are expected to push for a clearer pathway to first-team football as part of the negotiations, with regular opportunities at senior level likely to be a key consideration for the youngster’s future.
Gariba is highly regarded within the club’s management and is viewed as an important part of Barcelona’s long-term plans. His defensive qualities and consistent performances for Barça Atlètic have strengthened his standing at the club and attracted interest from several other sides.
The Ghanaian started pre-season with Barcelona’s first team and was hoping to make a case for a place in the senior squad. However, an injury disrupted his progress and delayed his opportunity to impress the first-team technical staff.
He has since returned to action and continued to produce strong performances for Barça Atlètic, keeping his development on track.
Gariba also came close to being considered for Barcelona’s Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain, but registration regulations prevented his inclusion. Under UEFA rules, young players must meet specific age and club-registration requirements to qualify for List B. Gariba is not expected to become eligible until at least January.
Barcelona’s proposed deal until 2031 is a sign of the club’s desire to retain the Ghanaian defender, although negotiations will also involve discussions over his route into the first team.
