Super Eagles forward Gift Orban completed a season-long loan deal to join Italian side Hellas Verona from Hoffenheim before the end of the summer transfer window, seeking a fresh start to his career.
The 23-year-old first caught the attention of top European clubs after an impressive campaign in Belgium with Gent. However, a switch to Olympique Lyon in January 2024, proved to be a wrong decision as the Nigerian forward never adapted to the side and eventually departed after just a year to join Hoffenheim.
He now leaves the German side only few months after joining them, with Verona set to pay an initial loan fee of €1 million and a potential €9 million to make the transfer permanent next summer if all criteria are met.
With Hellas Verona providing an avenue for a fresh beginning and a chance to make Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 African Cup of Nations tournament, here are three reasons the youngster will thrive at the club;
Pace for counter-attacking system
Gift Orban is known for his pace and quick speed which fits Hellas Verona’s style of play. The Yellow and Blues approach their games with a defensive setup, giving their forwards the opportunity to attack their opposition when they have the ball.
Orban is a constant threat on the field to opposition defenders with his constant runs, which is perfect for Verona’s system.

Goalscoring prowess
Gift Orban is a proven goalscorer and has previously shown remarkable goalscoring feats during his time in Belgium. He can lead the line effectively and is capable of converting chances with both feet.
Verona scored 36 times in 38 league matches last season, the 14th-best record in Serie A and have also struggled to find the net this campaign. The arrival of the Super Eagles forward is expected to provide an upgrade to their attack with his ability to convert chances.
Versatility
Gift Orban is primarily a striker, but can also feature on both wings. The Nigerian forward constantly drags defenders out of position with his runs and also creates attacking spaces for teammates to get into.
His versatility makes him a suitable asset to Verona’s squad, especially when facing teams with similar defensive setups.
