Egyptian champions Al Ahly have been rebuffed in their pursuit of Ghanaian starlet Douglas Owusu, after Serbian side FK Radnik Surdulica rejected a record-breaking opening offer, Africafoot reports.

The Cairo giants have identified the 19-year-old winger as a primary target for the winter window and submitted an official bid of €2.5m (£2.1m) last Sunday.

However, Radnik officials are understood to be holding out for a fee closer to €4m, buoyed by rival interest from Serbian heavyweights Red Star Belgrade and a growing list of European suitors.

Record-breaking talent

Should a deal eventually be reached, the transfer would shatter Radnik’s club record. Their current high remains the €1.3m sale of Igor Zlatanović to RCD Mallorca in 2019.

Despite only joining the Serbian side in the summer of 2024 from Asekem FC in Ghana, Owusu has quickly become one of the most talked-about teenagers in the Balkans.

His performances earned him a spot in the Serbian Team of the Season, and his value has soared further after he obtained Serbian citizenship earlier this year—a move that significantly eases any future move to major European leagues.

“Ongoing negotiations”

Owusu’s representative confirmed that talks between the two clubs are active but cautioned that personal terms have not yet been discussed.

“Negotiations began on Sunday and are still ongoing,” the player’s agent stated. “The completion of this transfer will depend entirely on whether the two clubs can find common ground on the valuation.”

The left-footed winger, who primarily operates on the right flank, has drawn comparisons to former Black Stars favorites for his explosive pace and technical ability in one-on-one situations. While Al Ahly remain the frontrunners, the Serbian club appears prepared to wait for a bidding war to erupt during the January window.
