Raphael Onyedika stated that he feels no pressure to prove himself after starring in Nigeria’s win over Uganda at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Club Brugge midfielder was left on the bench for the Super Eagles’ opening two Group C matches against Tanzania and Tunisia, with head coach Eric Chelle opting for Alex Iwobi, Fikayo Dele-Bashiru, Frank Onyeka and Wilfred Ndidi.

However, Onyedika was handed a rare start in the final group game against Uganda and made the most of his opportunity, scoring twice and earning the man-of-the-match award in an impressive display.

Speaking to reporters before training session, the 24-year-old played down suggestions that he was under pressure to make an impact:

“It is about being ready when the coach call upon you and I don’t need to put pressure on myself. I just have to keep doing my things that got me this far and be ready to play.”

The match also saw Chelle rotate his squad, giving opportunities to fringe players including Tochukwu Nnadi, Ryan Alebiosu, Francis Uzoho and Igho Ugbo.

Onyedika said he had no concerns about playing alongside new faces, adding that the senior players in the squad have helped everyone settle quickly:

“It’s good, we have leaders in the team and they are making it easier for everyone both the new and the old player.”

Nigeria finished top of Group C with a perfect nine points from three matches, and Onyedika will now hope to retain his place in the starting XI as the three-time African champions prepare for the knockout stages.
