Kaiserslautern are in advanced talks to sign highly-rated Freiburg defender of Nigerian descent Bruno Ogbus on loan for the remainder of the season, according to Florian Plettenberg.
The 20-year-old centre-back is set to leave the Europa-Park Stadion this month in search of regular first-team football, having spent much of the current campaign with Freiburg’s reserve side.
While several clubs, including VfL Bochum, have expressed interest in the Swiss youth international, the Red Devils are understood to be in pole position to secure his signature.
Ogbus was a notable omission from Freiburg’s Matchday squad for their recent Bundesliga fixture against Hamburg, further fueling suggestions that a move to the Fritz-Walter-Stadion is imminent.
Talent on the move
Ogbus is regarded as one of the brightest defensive prospects in the Bundesliga, known for his recovery pace and versatility across the backline.
Since joining Freiburg from Grasshopper Club Zurich in 2022, he has made a handful of senior appearances but has primarily developed in the Regionalliga.

With Kaiserslautern pushing for a strong finish in the 2. Bundesliga, manager Markus Anfang views the 20-year-old as the ideal profile to add depth and speed to his defensive ranks.
- Age: 20
- Position: Centre-back / Right-back
- International: Switzerland U-21
- Season stats: 13 appearances (Freiburg II), 2 goals
View from the Black Forest
Freiburg are keen to keep Ogbus as part of their long-term project—having tied him down to a contract extension last year—but Sporting Director Klemens Hartenbach is believed to favor a loan move to the second tier to accelerate his progress.
Should the deal be finalised this week, Ogbus could be available for Kaiserslautern’s upcoming league fixtures, providing a timely boost to a side looking to climb into the promotion play-off conversation.
