Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a formal move to sign FC Basel’s Ghanaian international Jonas Adjetey as they fight to preserve their Premier League status, according to Africafoot.

The Molineux club, currently rooted to the bottom of the table after 23 matchdays, have submitted an opening offer of €13m (£10.8m) plus €2m in add-ons for the 22-year-old center-back.

Survival Strategy

With the winter transfer window entering its final stages, Wolves manager Rob Edwards has prioritized defensive reinforcements. Adjetey, who has earned seven caps for the Black Stars, is seen as a key component in a late-season survival bid.

The deal on the table includes:

  • A five-year contract tying him to the West Midlands until 2031.
  • An annual salary of €2.5m, nearly tripling his current earnings in Switzerland.
  • A scheduled medical later this week, pending final agreement between the two clubs.

Rising star in demand

Adjetey’s stock has risen sharply since his arrival at St. Jakob-Park in August 2022. Despite a Transfermarkt valuation of €7m, the fierce competition for his signature has driven the price tag upward.

While Wolves are currently the frontrunners, they have had to fend off interest from Ligue 1 side RC Lens. Turkish giants Galatasaray also explored a deal for the defender last summer, but Adjetey opted to remain in Switzerland to continue his development.

Analysis: calculated gamble?

The Ghanaian is known for his recovery pace and aerial dominance—traits Wolves have lacked during a season where they have struggled to keep clean sheets. At 22, he represents both an immediate solution to a defensive crisis and a long-term asset with significant resale value.

However, moving from the Swiss Super League to a Premier League relegation scrap is a steep learning curve. If the deal crosses the line, Adjetey could be thrust straight into the starting XI for next weekend’s crucial fixture.
