Team news

Algeria face a significant blow in midfield as Ismaël Bennacer has been ruled out after picking up an injury during the grueling extra-time victory over DR Congo. Anis Hadj-Moussa is also unavailable due to suspension.

Coach Vladimir Petković is expected to lean on Hicham Boudaoui to fill the void, while the defensive unit remains anchored by Ramy Bensebaïni and goalkeeper Luca Zidane, who has kept three clean sheets in four games.

Nigeria appear to be at full strength, but head coach Eric Chelle has had to manage off-field headlines this week following a public on-field disagreement between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during their 4-0 win over Mozambique.

Lookman has been the Super Eagles’ standout performer with three goals and three assists, while Osimhen has three goals of his own. Wilfred Ndidi is expected to captain the side from midfield.

View from the camps

Algeria coach Vladimir Petković:

“Nigeria has the best attack in the tournament, but we have the best defense. We have evolved since the start of this competition and my players are ready to suffer to get the result we need.”

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle:

“We have achieved nothing yet. Winning four games is good, but in knockout football, history only cares about who moves on. We must stay consistent and avoid the lapses we saw in the group stages.”

Match facts

  • This is the 10th meeting between the two sides at the AFCON finals; the record is perfectly balanced with four wins each and one draw.
  • Algeria have won the last three competitive meetings between the nations, including the 2019 semi-final.
  • Nigeria has reached the semi-finals on a joint-record 16 occasions.
  • The winner will progress to face either Morocco or Cameroon in the semi-finals.
