Former Ghana midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah has expressed serious reservations about the competitiveness of the current Black Stars squad as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, cautioning that the team could struggle against the tournament’s elite sides.

Ghana will make their fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage in North America, where they have been placed in a daunting Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama .

The Black Stars head into the tournament determined to improve on recent disappointments, having exited at the group stage in both the 2014 and 2022 editions.

However, with head coach Carlos Queiroz expected to announce his final squad on June 1, Asamoah has questioned whether the current pool of players possesses the pedigree required to compete at the highest level.

“All these players that we are going to meet at the World Cup, the majority of them are playing in the Champions League, playing for bigger clubs, so to play countries like that during the World Cup won’t be easy,” Asamoah told 3Sports.

He went further to highlight England as one of the standout threats in the group, pointing to their recent consistency and tactical evolution.

“England has been good in the past few years, having the new coach with them. They are playing very good football,” he added.

Ghana’s campaign will begin with a clash against Panama on June 17, followed by a high-stakes encounter with England on June 23, before wrapping up the group stage against Croatia on June 27.

In the build-up to the tournament, Queiroz’s side is scheduled to fine-tune preparations with international friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2.
