Former Ghana midfielder Godwin Attram believes the Black Stars are steadily building the tactical discipline required to make a significant impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Carlos Queiroz‘s experience and game management emerging as key factors in the team’s ambitions.
Attram’s optimism comes after Ghana’s 1-1 stalemate with Wales in a preparatory fixture in North America, a performance he feels offered encouraging signs ahead of the global showpiece.
“What I saw against Wales was encouraging,” said Attram in an interview with Graphic Sports.
“We saw a team with a clear strategy. We defended well and, although our attacking transitions needed improvement, the coach identified the problem and made effective adjustments,” he pointed out.

According to the former international, Ghana displayed organisation and tactical discipline throughout much of the contest, while the technical bench demonstrated a willingness to react quickly when areas of weakness emerged.
One of the most notable changes arrived after the break when Ernest Nuamah was introduced. Attram believes the winger’s arrival transformed Ghana’s attacking approach by injecting speed, creativity and a more direct threat in the final third.
“The coach recognised the problem and brought on Ernest Nuamah, who performed that role very well,” Attram noted. “Even though he is returning from injury, his football intelligence remains evident.”
The ex-Black Stars midfielder is convinced that Queiroz’s ability to read matches and make timely interventions could prove crucial when Ghana begin their World Cup journey against Panama on June 17.
“If the team executes the medium press effectively and conserves energy for the key attacking players, Ghana can be dangerous. With midfielders capable of winning the ball quickly and supplying the wide players early, we can trouble Panama and any other team in the group,” he added.
Attram further argued that Ghana’s chances of advancing will depend heavily on maintaining a settled system, particularly at the back, while ensuring every player understands their tactical responsibilities.
“That shows tactical awareness and flexibility,” he said. “If Queiroz remains disciplined, gives players clear responsibilities and sticks to a well-defined game plan, Ghana have every chance of progressing,” Attram stated.

The Black Stars are preparing for their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance and face a challenging Group L assignment alongside England, Croatia and Panama. Ghana will kick off their campaign against Panama at BMO Field on June 17 before taking on England at Gillette Stadium six days later.
Their group-stage schedule concludes with a meeting against Croatia on June 27, a fixture that could ultimately determine their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.
