Ghana’s World Cup hopes have suffered a major blow after Toulouse FC confirmed that midfielder Francis Abu will not recover in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a devastating leg injury.

The 24-year-old playmaker sustained a severe fracture during Ghana’s 2–0 loss to Japan in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup on Friday. Abu went down in visible pain and had to be stretchered off in the second half, leaving both teammates and fans deeply concerned.

Toulouse have now officially announced that the injury will keep him out for several months, a timeline that rules him out of football’s biggest stage despite the World Cup still being seven months away.

The club expressed their heartbreak in a statement, saying:

“Images we hate to see. Selected by Ghana’s ‘Black Stars’ for friendly matches against Japan and South Korea, Francis Abu saw his season come to a premature end. Suffering a terrible injury against Japan, our midfielder will be sidelined for several months and will, unfortunately, miss the 2026 World Cup in the United States. Very sad news indeed.”

In a follow-up message of support, Toulouse added:

“The entire club wishes you a speedy recovery, Abu. Stay strong and come back to us soon; we’re all with you during this difficult time.”

Abu has already been released from international duty and is flying back to France, where he will undergo further scans and begin what is expected to be a lengthy rehabilitation journey. His absence leaves a significant gap in Ghana’s midfield plans ahead of the tournament.
