Nigerian players were once again at the centre of transfer activity across Europe, dominating both the summer window and the January market with a flurry of moves between clubs.

While several secured permanent transfers, a significant number opted for loan switches in search of regular playing time and fresh opportunities.

These temporary deals came with varying conditions – some included options or obligations to buy, while others were straightforward short-term arrangements with no guarantees beyond the current campaign.

For many of these players, the stakes have been clear: impress, adapt quickly, and prove their value in a new environment.

  • Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham, on loan from AC Milan)
  • Christantus Uche (Crystal Palace, on loan from Getafe)
  • Frank Onyeka (Coventry City, on loan from Brentford)
  • Victor Boniface (Werder Bremen, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen)
  • Terem Moffi (FC Porto, on loan from OGC Nice)

Some have thrived, becoming key figures for their respective sides, while others have endured mixed fortunes due to injuries, limited minutes, or tactical challenges.

Now, as the 2025/26 season gradually draws to a close across most European leagues, attention turns to what comes next. Decisions will soon be decided on whether clubs trigger purchase options, extend loan agreements, or allow players to return to their parent teams.

In this review, Footy-Africa takes a closer look at Nigerian players currently out on loan across Europe, evaluating their performances and assessing whether they have done enough to secure a permanent stay or an extended stint at their respective clubs.

Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham, on loan from AC Milan)

Took to Craven Cottage like a duck to water after an initial grey period at the club. With his compatriots – Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey at the club, he was well accepted among the players and fans.

Fulham consider €25m permanent deal for Samuel Chukwueze from AC Milan

Samuel Chukwueze, especially in the second half of the season, has shown he can do a job for Fulham with his displays.

Three goals and four assists in 19 games in all competitions have reportedly convinced the Fulham hierarchy to make the move permanent.

AC Milan are reportedly looking at €25 million for the 26-year-old, which fits into Fulham’s budget.

Tip: Samuel Chukwueze to stay in England with Fulham

Christantus Uche (Crystal Palace, on loan from Getafe)

After a stellar showing in his debut season at Spanish side Getafe, Christantus Uche made the jump to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.

However, things did not go according to plan as he found it hard to break into the Palace team. Despite scoring a brilliant goal in the Europa Conference League, it did little to help his cause.

Five Nigerian stars set for potential summer transfers

It was later revealed that he needed to make 10 Premier League starts to trigger a release clause in his contract, which does not look likely to happen as he has failed to start a single game. With just six games to go, he won’t meet that target.

This quagmire has also put his parent club Getafe in trouble with La Liga, which has seen their budget reduced.

Uche has made 14 Premier League appearances, all from the bench, while scoring twice in the UEFA Conference League, which has not convinced the Crystal Palace management.

Tip: Uche to return to Getafe, who will look for other buyers for the forward.

Frank Onyeka (Coventry City, on loan from Brentford)

The midfielder’s move to Coventry City in January seems to have worked well, as he has become an integral part of Frank Lampard’s promotion-chasing side.

After a difficult start to the season, Frank Onyeka decided to try another club and dropped down to the Championship, which now seems a masterstroke.

Coventry City eye permanent deal for Frank Onyeka: transfer breakdown

He has been fantastic for Coventry in the middle of the park and has impressed for the Championship leaders.

The 28-year-old midfielder has already made 10 appearances for the team, scoring a fantastic screamer against Derby County.

According to the details of the deal, he will sign a permanent contract if Coventry secure promotion to the Premier League, which looks highly likely as the team sit top of the Championship with 84 points, 12 ahead of nearest rivals Ipswich—who have two games in hand.

Tip: Frank Onyeka to sign a permanent deal with Coventry City, who will secure promotion to the Premier League.

Victor Boniface (Werder Bremen, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen)

The forward has not been able to replicate his form from the 2023/24 season, which saw Victor Boniface win the league with Leverkusen and claim several individual honours.

A loss of form and injuries have contributed to his declining profile in recent times. A move to AC Milan collapsed at the last minute before the season, but he later secured a loan move to Werder Bremen.

Five Nigerians eligible to talk with clubs before summer transfer window

Boniface has managed only 11 games for Werder Bremen since his summer transfer, providing just two assists before his campaign was cut short by injury.

Though he is back in training, with the season winding down, it looks unlikely he will be a key figure for Bremen in their fight against relegation.

Tip: Victor Boniface to return to Bayer Leverkusen to fight for his place in the team.

Terem Moffi (FC Porto, on loan from OGC Nice)

After an altercation with the Nice ultras last December, the forward sought a move away from the club. In January, Terem Moffi got his wish as he was sent on loan to Portuguese side FC Porto.

He has enjoyed some relative success with the team, even though he spent a few weeks out of action due to off-field issues.

With the limited time he has had at the club, he has shown glimpses of what he can offer, which will encourage the management.

So far, he has scored one goal and provided an assist in about seven games and will hope to add more before the end of the season. With an agreement of €8 million in place for a permanent transfer, he just might stay in Portugal.

Tip: Terem Moffi’s situation remains a little precarious, as a future at Nice looks unlikely. Reports suggest Porto could make a move depending on Nice’s valuation of the player.
