Having turned down offers from three Turkish sides including Antalyaspor, Kocaelispor and Istanbul Başakşehir, Nigerian international and forward Henry Onyekuru has advanced in negotiations with Gençlerbirliği, Footy-Africa has exclusively confirmed.
Gençlerbirliği have made their intentions clear, as they want to sign the player this week. Already in direct negotiations with the player, through his agency Foot&Ball, the parties are close to reaching an agreement, with medicals scheduled between Thursday and Friday.
In an exclusive interview with a source at Foot&Ball, Onyekuru will move to Gençlerbirliği, should they match his financial and on-pitch demands. The club wants to sign him on a three-year employment contract.
“Henry (Onyekuru) has made it clear that he will only join a team if they match all his demands, and it’s the same case with the Gençlerbirliği talks. He rejected Antalyaspor and Kocaelispor because they didn’t meet his demands. Gençlerbirliği want to sign him on a three-year contract, and want to wrap the deal before the weekend. An agreement is really close and if it’s reached early, he’ll do his medicals between Thursday and Friday,” the source exclusively told Footy-Africa.
In his most recent spell, Onyekuru played for Al-Fayha in Saudi Arabia, a team he featured for since 2023, when he joined from Turkish side Adana Demirspor in 2023. The striker left Al-Fayha after 38 matches, with 11 goals and three assists. In his final campaign at the club, he was limited to just four appearances. At Adana Demirspor, he found the back of the net eight times, with two assists in 30 matches.
Previously, Onyekuru, whose transfermarkt valuation is still estimated at €3 million, has been around Europe with stints at Olympiacos in Greece, Galatasaray in Turkey, Monaco in France, Everton in the English Premier League and Belgian sides Anderlecht as well as KAS Eupen.
