Belgian-Ghanian winger Emmanuel Oppong held a trial with Premier League side Ipswich Town before completing his move to Slovak top-flight club KFC Komárno, his agent Papa Agyemang has exclusively confirmed to Footy-Africa.
The talented 18-year-old signed a three-year deal with Komárno earlier this month after leaving Belgian club KAA Gent.
Oppong began his career at Club Brugge before joining Gent, where he continued his development at one of Belgium’s leading academies.
He is now set to continue his development in Slovakia, where he is expected to feature for Komárno’s first team.
The youngster has already made the matchday squad and could make his senior debut on Saturday when Komárno face defending Slovak champions Slovan Bratislava.
Speaking exclusively to Footy-Africa, Agyemang backed Oppong to develop into a top player if he fulfils his potential.
“Emmanuel is an exciting player with a unique set of skills. He has had a good education at famed academies like Gent and Brugge, where he played with Jesse Bisuwu, now of Barcelona. With senior football experience at Komárno, I expect Emmanuel to develop into a top player if he can realise his full potential,” Agyemang said.
The agent also revealed that Oppong came close to securing a move to Ipswich Town, even training with the Premier League club.
“He was supposed to sign at Ipswich Town. He even trained at the club. It didn’t work out,” he added.
Agyemang believes the opportunity to train with a Premier League club is an indication of Oppong’s potential, despite the move ultimately falling through.
Having now opted for regular first-team football in Slovakia, Oppong will hope to use the experience at Komárno as another important step in his development.
Despite growing up in Belgium, the youngster remains eligible to represent Ghana at senior international level.
