Inaki Williams: ‘We will make Arsenal uncomfortable at San Mamés’

Athletic Club forward and Ghana international Inaki Williams has set his sights on Arsenal ahead of their UEFA Champions League showdown, insisting the Basque giants will leave nothing to chance when the Gunners visit San Mamés on Tuesday evening.

At 31, Williams remains one of the Lions’ most dependable figures, a symbol of loyalty and consistency for the Bilbao faithful. Yet this campaign has started slowly for him on a personal note, with the striker still searching for his first goal or assist after four appearances.

Athletic’s bright opening to the season has also dimmed in recent weeks, with Valverde’s men winless in their last two home fixtures, the latest setback being a frustrating draw with Deportivo Alavés. For manager Ernesto Valverde, the challenge of hosting Arsenal under such circumstances means sharpening his squad’s focus and addressing the lapses that have recently cost them momentum.

Despite the rocky patch, Williams has no doubt that San Mamés can be turned into a fortress when the crowd is behind them. Speaking with determination, he promised that Arsenal will not have it easy under the floodlights.

“Today we’ll have a discussion and videos about how we can hurt Arsenal. We’re a team that tries to press and smother our opponents, especially at home, where we feel supported. We’ll try to break up their game and make them uncomfortable,” Williams stated to the media.

The Champions League group-stage clash kicks off at 16:45 (GMT) on Tuesday, September 16, at the iconic San Mamés, where the Lions will look to roar back to winning ways against Mikel Arteta’s men.
