Former Nigerian international and Gil Vicente midfielder Henry Makinwa during an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa defended Terem Moffi after the striker was booed by FC Porto fans following Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final clash against Nottingham Forest.
The 26-year-old Nigerian forward endured a difficult evening at the Estádio do Dragão, where Porto were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg.
Moffi, who joined the Portuguese side on loan from OGC Nice in January, struggled to make an impact, registering just 11 touches, two shots on target, and missing two clear chances before being substituted in the 60th minute for Deniz Gül. Sections of the home crowd responded with whistles as he left the pitch.
Despite the reaction from supporters, Makinwa believes the criticism should not be taken negatively, insisting fans should serve as motivation for players to improve.
“It’s never fair for any athlete to be booed by fans. In reality, supporters are meant to inspire you to give more, reshape your game, and get better. So it disappointing,” Makinwa exclusively told Footy-Africa.
Moffi was entrusted to lead Porto’s attack and was involved in the game’s early decisive moments. Inside the opening minute, he broke through on goal but fired straight at Ortega, with Borja Sainz unable to convert the rebound. Later in the first half, he met a cross from Fofana with a well-timed header, only to be denied again by the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper.
Makinwa, however, stressed that demanding supporters often expect more from players they rate highly.
“It is normal for fans to demand more from players they believe can offer more. When you don’t perform well and the fans go quiet, it often means you’ve been written off. So, in a way, being booed can still be a positive sign. It shows they know you’re capable of more,” he added.
Moffi has scored two goals in 12 appearances for Porto since arriving on loan, and Thursday’s performance further increased pressure on the Nigerian striker ahead of the return leg.

While acknowledging the mental challenge such reactions can pose, Makinwa urged the forward to remain focused and respond positively.
“It (boo) might affect younger players mentally, but maturity helps you channel that energy positively and improve. My advice to Moffi: eat well, sleep well, train harder, stay positive, and just do it,” Viktoria Setubal former player concluded.
