In an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, former Kenya international McDonald Mariga has paid a glowing tribute to compatriot Victor Wanyama following his retirement from football, hailing him as a pioneer who elevated Kenyan football onto the global stage.
Wanyama, who enjoyed standout spells at Celtic FC, Southampton FC, and Tottenham Hotspur, made history as the first Kenyan to score in the UEFA Champions League, a landmark moment that continues to inspire generations.

Mariga, himself a history-maker as the first Kenyan to play in and win the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan, reflected warmly on Wanyama’s journey and impact.
“Victor’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary. From his early days to conquering Europe with Celtic and the Premier League, he showed the world what Kenyan talent is capable of. That goal against Barcelona wasn’t just his moment, it was a moment for an entire nation,” Mariga said as he exclusively spoke to Footy-Africa.
“What stands out most about Victor is his resilience and humility. He carried the hopes of many young players and never shied away from responsibility. His leadership with Harambee Stars and his success abroad opened doors and gave belief to so many.”
