Arsenal have reached an agreement with Marseille for the loan of highly-rated midfielder Ethan Nwaneri of Nigerian descent for the remainder of the season, according to Foot Mercato.
The 18-year-old is expected to travel to France on Wednesday to undergo a medical and finalize a six-month move that does not include an option to buy.
Nwaneri, who became the youngest player in Premier League history when he debuted at 15, has seen his first-team opportunities limited this term following the summer arrivals of Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke.
The England Under-21 international has featured 12 times in all competitions this season but has yet to start a Premier League match.

De Zerbi factor
It is understood that personal interventions from both managers played a significant role in the move. Marseille head coach Roberto De Zerbi held positive discussions with Mikel Arteta, with the Arsenal boss reportedly convinced that the Italian’s expansive style of play is the ideal environment for Nwaneri’s development.
While several Premier League clubs, including Bournemouth and West Ham, expressed interest in a domestic loan, Arsenal were adamant about a straight loan deal to ensure they retain full control over the player’s long-term future.
Deal details
- Duration: Six-month loan until June 2026.
- Financials: Marseille will pay a loan fee of approximately €3m, which is subject to change based on the player’s total appearances.
- No Buy Option: Arsenal view Nwaneri as a cornerstone of their future and refused to include any permanent transfer clauses.
Marseille currently sit third in Ligue 1 and see Nwaneri as a key addition to their creative ranks as they push for Champions League qualification.
The teenager is currently in Milan with the Arsenal squad for Tuesday’s Champions League tie against Inter but is expected to fly directly to the south of France following the match.
