German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich completed the signing of Senegal international Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea on summer transfer deadline day, ending a transfer saga involving the player and his parent club.
Jackson initially looked set to move to Germany, until the Blues called off the transfer following an injury to Liam Delap. However, in a twist of events, the Senegal forward refused to return to England, before getting his move and signing a deal on-loan until the end of the season.
The Bavarians agreed to pay an initial £14.3 million loan fee for the services of the 24-year-old, but with an obligation to sign permanently for £56.2 million if some appearances-related criteria are met.
Jackson joins as extra attacking cover for first-choice centre forward Harry Kane, and also offers a different attacking profile to the England captain.
The Senegalese striker had seen competition for spots increase in the Chelsea’s squad following the summer arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, and was not helped by his profligacy in front of goal.
Transfer fee and contract details
Bayern Munich paid a loan fee of £14.3 million to Chelsea, while the total package of the transfer could rise up to £70.5 million if the compulsory obligation to sign the striker is met next summer.
The loan fee is the fourth-highest amount paid for a temporary transfer in football history, with only Álvaro Morata (twice) and Giovanni Lo Celso, commanding higher transfer fees.
The German champions beat the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United amongst several other suitors to the signature of the 24-year-old, completing the deal on transfer deadline day.
