Nigeria vs Gabon Match Preview

Nigeria recorded a comprehensive 4-0 win over Benin Republic in their final qualifying match in Group C to book their spot as one of the best ranked second-placed teams. The Super Eagles started their campaign slowly, but a couple of wins towards the end of the qualifying rounds ensured their hopes of reaching next year’s event remains alive.

The Three-time African champions lost only one of their 10 group matches, but recorded just four victories and drew five matches to finish on 17 points, a single point behind group winners South Africa.

Gabon, on the other hand, narrowly missed out on an automatic spot in Group F, finishing just a single point behind the Ivory Coast – who topped the group. They won eight of their 10 group matches, while their only defeat was a 1-0 result against the Elephants.

The Panthers finished with the most points among the second-placed teams (19), after a 2-0 win over Burundi on the final match-day secured their spot.

  • 24.08.1989 – Gabon 2-1 Nigeria
  • 07.01.1989 – Nigeria 1-0 Gabon

This will be a first meeting between both African nations in 20 years, although Nigeria hold the upper hand in their last five encounters.

The Super Eagles have three wins to Gabon’s one, while one other clash ended in a stalemate.

Recent Form: Nigeria

Nigeria have been impressive of late and won three of their final four qualifying matches in Group C, with the only exception being a 1-1 draw against South Africa.

The Super Eagles scored multiple times in three of those games and also kept two clean sheets, including in the 4-0 win over Benin Republic that sealed their playoff spot.

Recent Form: Gabon

Gabon have also been on a great form with four wins from their last five group qualifying matches.

The Panthers also kept three clean sheets in that run, although they conceded three in a single game when they defeated Gambia 4-3 in their penultimate group game.

Player to Watch: Victor Osimhen (Nigeria)

Victor Osimhen has been in remarkable form in recent outings for his club, and netted a stunning hat-trick in his previous outing for Nigeria.

The 26-year-old will lead the Super Eagles’ attack against Gabon and will offer a major threat aerially and with his pace.

Prediction

Nigeria possess enough attacking threat to seal a favourable result from this clash, and will be driven by the disappointment of missing the last World Cup after elimination at the same stage.
