Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has deliberately avoided giving any hint about whether skipper Yves Bissouma will be involved when the Eagles lock horns with tournament hosts Morocco in Friday’s crucial Group A encounter at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder sat out Mali’s opening fixture against Zambia after picking up an injury, casting doubt over his availability for the remainder of the group stage. However, his appearance alongside Saintfiet at the official pre-match press conference in Rabat immediately sparked fresh debate about a possible comeback against the Atlas Lions.
Saintfiet, though, was quick to pour cold water on the speculation, insisting that Bissouma’s presence at media duties should not be read as a tactical clue.
“The reason Yves is here today is not because he will necessarily play tomorrow,” Saintfiet told Vodacom Soccer. “There is no link between who sits next to me and who starts the match. Maybe he plays, maybe he doesn’t.”
The Belgian tactician’s measured response underlined his intent to keep Morocco guessing, particularly with Mali facing one of the strongest sides in the competition. With qualification stakes rising, Saintfiet appears keen to balance transparency with strategic ambiguity.

For Bissouma himself, the uncertainty surrounding his fitness seemed of little concern. The Mali captain struck a composed and selfless tone, stressing that the team’s mission outweighs any personal considerations.
“What matters to me today is Mali,” he said. “I am here and fully focused on tomorrow’s match. The rest doesn’t concern me.”
Those words echoed the leadership qualities that have made Bissouma such a central figure within the squad. Even if he is deemed unfit to start, or to feature at all, his influence continues to resonate strongly in the Malian camp, especially among a youthful group preparing to test themselves against one of AFCON’s title contenders.

The midfielder reinforced that leadership is not confined to the pitch, highlighting the collective responsibility within the team.
“As captain, I try to bring a positive spirit to the group,” he added. “Everyone can motivate the team in their own way.”
As Mali edge closer to kickoff in Rabat, Bissouma’s status remains one of the game’s biggest question marks. Whether he plays or not, his presence alone underscores the unity and quiet confidence driving the Eagles into a defining AFCON showdown.
