Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu is expected to leave Southampton this summer as the Championship club prepares for a major squad overhaul. The 31-year-old forward, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor, is now weighing his options as he enters the final year of his contract.
Despite his strong form in Turkey, Onuachu struggled to make an impact at Southampton, featuring just 11 times in the Premier League before the club’s relegation. With several clubs showing interest, Footy-Africa highlights three potential destinations for the Super Eagles star.
1. Trabzonspor Return
After an outstanding loan spell where he scored 17 goals and provided four assists across all competitions, Trabzonspor are keen to bring Onuachu back on a permanent deal. The Turkish club, which secured a return to the UEFA Europa League, attempted to sign him last summer, but the move was blocked by then-Southampton boss Martin Russell.
Now, with Southampton more likely to cash in, a permanent transfer could be finalised this time around—especially as Onuachu’s agent has publicly indicated the player’s preference to return to Trabzon.
2. Besiktas Interest Resurfaces
Besiktas are also monitoring Onuachu’s situation. Managed by former Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Turkish giants attempted to sign the striker in January and are expected to return with another offer this summer.
Given his successful previous stint in the Süper Lig, Onuachu would be seen as a valuable addition to Besiktas’ attack. A move to another Turkish giant could offer a new chapter while keeping him in a league where he’s already proven himself.
3. Club Brugge Eyeing Belgian Reunion
Club Brugge are reportedly exploring a move for Onuachu, who first rose to prominence in Belgium with Genk, scoring 85 goals in over 100 appearances. A return to the Jupiler Pro League could suit both parties, with Brugge finishing as runners-up last season and looking to strengthen their front line.
Onuachu’s familiarity with Belgian football and proven track record make this an appealing option, especially for a team aiming for domestic success and European competition.
What Next for Paul Onuachu?
With just one year left on his Southampton contract, the Saints are open to offers for the Super Eagles forward. Besides the three club’s listed, there has been also reported an interest from the French side Stade Rennais. If a suitable bid arrives—likely in the region of what Trabzonspor or Besiktas are willing to offer—Onuachu could be on the move once again, with Turkish football appearing the most likely destination.
