Former Ghana international Yaw Acheampong in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa has stated that the Black Stars’ opening Group L clash against Panama will determine how far they progress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana arrived at their tournament base in Rhode Island on Thursday and will remain there for the duration of the competition. Carlos Queiroz’s side begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before taking on England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
The Black Stars are aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their quarter-final run in South Africa in 2010, and Acheampong believes a winning start is non-negotiable.
“We have to beat Panama because that is the game that will define our tournament,” Acheampong exclusively told Footy-Africa. “If we win that first match, the confidence in the camp will grow immediately. The players will believe they can compete with England and Croatia because they already have three points on the board. That changes the whole mentality going into the remaining group games.”

The former defender believes Ghana have the quality to compete with any team in the group but stressed that teamwork and discipline will be key.
“I have watched this team closely and I think they have what it takes to do well. We have experienced players, exciting young talent and footballers competing at a high level in Europe.”
“The biggest thing at a World Cup is unity. Individual quality alone will not win matches. Every player must be prepared to fight for the badge, stay disciplined and work for his teammates. If Ghana does that, I believe they can surprise a lot of people.”
Acheampong also singled out Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo as one of the players capable of making the difference for the Black Stars. Semenyo comes into the tournament having had a great season, with 21 goals and having won two titles.
“Semenyo has developed into a complete forward. He is strong, quick, direct and never stops working. He has improved his finishing and his decision-making, and he is now playing with great confidence.”
“He has the qualities to trouble any defence at this World Cup. If he performs at the level we know he can, he will be one of Ghana’s most important players.”

Despite being drawn alongside England and Croatia, Acheampong remains optimistic about Ghana’s chances.
“People are talking about England and Croatia, but for me, everything starts with Panama. Win that game, and suddenly the whole group changes. That first result can give the team the belief to go on and achieve something special.”
He urged the players to embrace the occasion and seize the opportunity to write their own piece of history.
“The World Cup is where every footballer wants to be. These players have earned the chance to represent Ghana on the biggest stage. They should enjoy the moment, play with confidence and give everything for the country because these opportunities do not come often. I believe this team can make Ghanaians proud, but it all starts with beating Panama.”
