“Up to Stanley to prove himself” – Shorunmu on Nwabali to Raja rumours

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu exclusively for Footy-Africa has expressed confidence that Stanley Nwabali will thrive wherever he decides to take his career next, but stressed the importance of making the right move at the right time.

Nwabali, who has been a revelation since his standout performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast, continues to attract interest from clubs abroad.

His composure, commanding presence, and crucial saves helped Nigeria reach the final of the tournament, where they narrowly lost to the host nation.

Following his heroics at AFCON, the Chippa United shot-stopper became the subject of transfer speculation, with rumours linking him to clubs in Belgium and South Africa. Despite the buzz, no deal materialised, and he remained with the Port Elizabeth-based outfit, continuing to lead as club captain.

Even before the AFCON breakthrough, Nwabali had been tipped for a move away, but again opted to stay at Chippa. Now, fresh reports suggest that Raja Casablanca of Morocco are keen on securing his services, sparking renewed interest and debate over his future.

Shorunmu, who earned 34 caps for Nigeria and played in Europe for clubs like FC Zurich and Besiktas, believes the final decision must rest with Nwabali himself.

He sees the 29-year-old as a top-class goalkeeper who still has his best years ahead of him.

“Ultimately, it is up to Stanley to decide what he wants from his life and his football career. He is a fantastic goalkeeper with the quality to succeed anywhere,” Shorunmu said, reacting to the links with Raja Casablanca.

He added that a move to Morocco would present a fresh challenge and could be a stepping stone to greater things if Nwabali makes the most of the opportunity.

“It’s a new environment, different from what he’s used to in South Africa. The club clearly believes in him, and it is now up to Stanley to prove himself again.”

At 29, Nwabali has already amassed 21 caps for Nigeria and continues to grow in stature both at international level and in club football.
