Black Stars assistant coach Desmond Ofei believes Ghana’s upcoming friendly against Mexico national football team will serve as a significant measure of the team’s readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The four-time African champions are set to lock horns with the North American giants on May 22 in a highly anticipated preparatory fixture as Ghana intensify plans for the tournament to be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Ofei described the encounter as an ideal opportunity for the technical team to assess the squad against elite opposition while giving players another chance to develop ahead of the Mundial.
“Mexico is a top-level opponent with a strong football culture, great intensity, and international experience, so this will be an important test for our group,” he said.
The assistant coach further explained that matches of such calibre are essential in shaping the future of the national team and evaluating progress within the squad.
“These are the types of matches that help players grow, help coaches evaluate, and help a nation continue building for the future,” Ofei added.
The Mexico showdown forms a key part of Ghana’s final preparations before the World Cup kicks off later this year. The Black Stars are also expected to face Wales in another international friendly on June 2.

Ghana head into the competition determined to make a stronger impression after disappointing group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 tournaments. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama.
Their World Cup journey will begin against Panama on June 17 before a heavyweight encounter with England on June 23. Ghana will then conclude the group phase with a decisive fixture against Croatia on June 27.
The Black Stars will be aiming to reach the knockout stage for the first time since their memorable quarter-final run at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
