Footy-Africa can exclusively report that Brighton & Hove Albion’s highly-rated Nigerian teenager Zadok Yohanna will remain with the club’s senior squad for the 2025-26 season, despite widespread reports suggesting he would be sent out on loan following his summer arrival.

Sources close to the player have indicated that Brighton’s plan from the outset has been to integrate Yohanna directly into Fabian Hurzeler’s senior setup rather than continue his development elsewhere.

“The agreement is to keep the player in the first team,” a source close to Yohanna exclusively told Footy-Africa.

The source further revealed that Brighton have already begun implementing a personalised development programme for the teenager as part of preparations for the new campaign.

“He has been given a personal training programme and has already started pre-season work ahead of the club’s official resumption.”

That level of preparation suggests Brighton’s coaching staff view Yohanna as a player capable of contributing immediately rather than one requiring another transitional step away from the club.

In another significant development, the source confirmed that the player’s registration process has been completed and approved in England.

“His registration was done in England and has been cleared.”

Perhaps most notably, the source moved to dismiss speculation regarding a temporary move elsewhere.

“He’s not going on loan, what is being reported is fake news.”

The 18-year-old completed a high-profile move from Swedish giants AIK in a deal reportedly worth an initial £25 million, with a further £5 million in performance-related add-ons. His transfer underlined Brighton’s growing reputation for identifying and investing in elite young talent before their value explodes on the European stage.

‘He’ll be worth €180 million’ – Nigerian Academy owner on Zadok Yohanna

Yohanna’s talents attracted significant attention across Europe, with Premier League rivals Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United, as well as Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, all understood to have tracked the Nigerian prodigy before Brighton secured his signature.

However, shortly after the transfer was completed, several media outlets reported that Brighton were considering sending the teenager on loan to Spain in order to accelerate his development through regular first-team football.

Significant statement of intent

Brighton’s decision to retain Yohanna within the senior squad would represent a significant vote of confidence in one of Africa’s most exciting young prospects.

The Seagulls have earned widespread praise in recent years for their recruitment strategy, identifying emerging talent before many of Europe’s traditional heavyweights. The club’s success stories include players who arrived with potential and subsequently developed into Premier League stars and sought-after internationals.

While Brighton have frequently utilised loan moves as part of player development pathways, the apparent decision to keep Yohanna at the club suggests he is viewed differently.

Peter Ijeh: Brighton-bound Zadok Yohanna will thrive in the Premier League

Sources indicate that club officials believe daily exposure to Premier League-level training, combined with close guidance from the first-team coaching staff, offers the best environment for his progression.

For a teenager arriving from the Swedish Allsvenskan, adapting to the intensity and physical demands of English football is often considered a major challenge. Yet Brighton appear confident that Yohanna possesses the qualities required to make that transition.

Rising expectations

Yohanna arrives in England carrying considerable expectations.

His performances in Sweden established him as one of the continent’s most promising young players, attracting scouts from some of Europe’s biggest clubs and eventually prompting Brighton to make a substantial financial commitment.

A package worth up to £30 million for an 18-year-old reflects the level of belief Brighton have in his long-term potential.

The coming months will now be closely watched by supporters eager to see whether the teenager can force his way into Hurzeler’s matchday plans.

While Brighton are unlikely to place undue pressure on a player still at the beginning of his professional journey, the latest developments indicate that the club sees Yohanna as part of its immediate future rather than a project for another team to develop.

For now, reports of a Spanish loan move can be put to rest.

Instead, Brighton’s newest Nigerian star appears set to begin the next chapter of his career exactly where the club wants him: in the first-team squad at the Amex Stadium.
