Turkish side Trabzonspor secured the services of Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana from Manchester United, just before the summer transfer window closed in Turkey.

The deal is a season-long loan deal, with no guaranteed loan fee and no option to buy inserted in the transfer clause.

Onana did not feature in any of Manchester United’s opening three English Premier League matches this season, while his only appearance for the club came in the shock second round Carabao Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town, where he was at fault for the two goals conceded by his side.

His departure comes at a critical point of rebuild for the Red Devils who have also signed Senne Lammens, after enduring a catastrophic 2024/25 season where they finished the season with their lowest point tally and league finish since the 1973/74 season when they were relegated to the lower division.

The 29-year-old is set to receive a significant increase in his pay at Trabzonspor, following the reduction of his salary at Manchester United after the club failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League.

Transfer fee and contract details

Trabzonspor completed a one-year loan deal for the Cameroon goalkeeper from Manchester United, with no option to buy, and will not pay a loan fee to the English club.

The former Inter Milan goalkeeper looked certain to join Galatasaray this summer, until Trabzonspor made a late swoop to snatch him from their rivals.

The 29-year-old made a number of high-profile errors since joining the Red Devils in 2023, but showcased his talents with a player-of-the-match performance on his debut for the Turkish side in their 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce last weekend.

Salary breakdown

Per Capology, Andre Onana will earn about £199,000 weekly, with a basic salary of about £119,000 and £80,000 in bonuses.

This will bring his total earnings at the end of his one-year contract to about £10.35 million.

Despite not paying a transfer fee for the Cameroonian, Onana becomes one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, with their total investment up to about £10.35 million for the season.

From Manchester to Northeast Turkey

Onana joined Manchester United in 2023 after leading Inter Milan to the UEFA Champions League final.

However, he struggled for form at the Red Devils, making several high-profile errors that cost his side valuable points.

Now set for a fresh start in Turkey, he showed fans a glimpse of his qualities with a composed display on his debut, and will hope for more of that performance for the Turkish side as they aim for a higher league finish this season.
