Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface completed a season-long loan deal from Bayer Leverkusen to join league rivals Werder Bremen on transfer deadline day. The Nigerian forward finally secured a move on his third attempt, following two unsuccessful efforts to leave the club.

Boniface first agreed to leave the 2024 Bundesliga champions in January, after accepting personal terms with Al Nassr. However, the Saudi Premier League side opted to sign Colombian forward Jhon Duran at the last minute, as Boniface remained at the German side.

The 24-year-old made headlines once again this summer and looked destined to join AC Milan, only for the Italian side to cancel the transfer after a failed medical.

The switch to Werder Bremen offers Victor Boniface a chance to reset and get regular playing time as he hopes to make Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 African Cup of Nations. Here are three reasons the move is a favourable one for the on-loan forward.

Proven Goalscoring record

Nigerian international Victor Boniface is not new to German football and was very influential for Bayer Leverkusen in their 2023/24 unbeaten Bundesliga campaign.

He averaged a goal contribution per game in that season, contributing 14 goals and 9 assists in 23 league appearances.

The 24-year-old is very clinical and with his tally of 22 goals across two seasons in the Bundesliga, he will be very important for Bremen, who have struggled for goals in the past two campaigns.

Boniface’s style suits Bremen’s system

Victor Boniface’s ability to hold up the ball and link up with teammates will be very effective in Werder Bremen’s setup.

The Nigerian forward can play as the main striker and also as a second striker and can create dangerous opportunities for teammates to get into.

Boniface’s pace and off-the-ball movements, will also see him flourish in Werder Bremen’s quick transition setup.

Physicality

Boniface is a huge figure and is strong on the ball. His physical presence also makes him a threat to opposition defenders with his ability to win both ground and aerial duels.

The Nigerian forward also has the ability to drive the ball and beat defenders with ease, making him a very valuable addition to the Werder Bremen team.
