Former Nigerian international Peter Ijeh, in an exclusive interview with Footy-Africa, has backed Ryan Alebiosu to become an important player for the Super Eagles.

The right-back has been an influential figure for Blackburn Rovers this season after joining in the summer from Belgian side KV Kortrijk on an initial three-year deal.

His performances for Rovers have drawn wide praise and caught the attention of Nigeria. After being named in the provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, Alebiosu has now been confirmed as part of the final 26-man team heading to Morocco.

The 23-year-old becomes the latest English-born player to switch allegiance to Nigeria.

“He’s a good player, and I believe everyone deserves a chance to play for the country, irrespective of their place of birth,” Ijeh exclusively told Footy-Africa. “He’s playing at Blackburn Rovers, a good club, and his addition will help provide cover for Ola Aina.”

“I want to see him succeed with the team, and I hope he’ll take his chance when he gets it because we have some quality players in defense as well.”

The final squad announcement came with several surprises, including the exclusion of Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, Werder Bremen star Victor Boniface, Wolves forward Tolu Arokodare, and Kelechi Iheanacho, while several newcomers have been handed their first call-ups.

Midfielders Usman Muhammed, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, and Tochukwu Nnadi, as well as Croatia-based forward Salim Fago Lawal, will be joining the senior team for the first time.

Paul Onuachu also returned to the squad, while Ebenezer Akinsanmiro received his first senior call-up.

“The squad is good, with just a few additions here and there, but I believe the coach has his reasons for his selections. We have top players, but the results haven’t been good enough recently; still, I believe the team can do well in Morocco,” Ijeh added.

Nigeria will play Egypt in a friendly on December 16 at Cairo Stadium before heading to Fès for their AFCON Group C matches.

The Super Eagles face Tanzania on December 23, Tunisia on December 27, and Uganda on December 30.
